A nonprofit organization based in Rockville, Maryland, the Fisher House Foundation is a unique organization devoted to making it easier for families to visit their loved ones who are serving in the military. The Foundation builds houses on the premises of military medical centers so that families can be there to support a serviceman or woman during unexpected hospitalizations. Since its establishment in 1990, the Foundation has provided over four million days of accommodation to family members at no cost.

Each house can accommodate up to 42 individuals and is between 5,000 and 16,000 square feet with space for 8 to 21 suites. Houses are professionally designed and decorated, with plenty of common space, a kitchen, laundry room, dining room, living room, and a play area for children.

The Fisher House Foundation relies on the support of its volunteers. In 2010, volunteers for the organization donated more than 75,000 hours of volunteer service time. Each volunteer contributes to the vital service that the Foundation provides for each of the families who stay in a Fisher House home.
