How Telemedicine Is Impacting Medical Professionals and Patients

Peter Killcommons

Peter (Pete) Killcommons serves as the chief executive officer of Medweb, an Internet-based provider of medical imaging and telemedicine solutions to hospitals, physicians, and patients. Peter Killcommons gave the keynote address at the 1st Armenian International Congress on Telemedicine and eHealth in 2011.

Now in use for more than three decades, telemedicine enhances patient care through the use of electronic communications. Technologies such as email and video conferencing allow medical professionals to provide patient and specialist consultations, exchange medical data, monitor vital signs remotely, and offer peer-to-peer support from any location. Furthermore, telemedicine improves access to continuing medical education for physicians.
From the perspective of the patient, satisfaction with the technology has increased over the past 15 years, according to the American Telemedicine Association. Having the ability to receive care from providers remotely has greatly benefited individuals who don’t have a car or have difficulty using public transportation, especially if there is no care available in their local vicinity.
